The unveiling of Alderman Sheriff Tim Hailes FKC’s portrait by Ellie Damant took place at The Walbrook Club, London, November 2022. This event was kindly supported by the Abu Dhabi Arts Society.

The Honourable Philip Palumbo and Sir David Lidington and his wife Lady Lidington were in attendance, with Richard Oliver OBE’s speech on the portrait’s creation cultivating cultural links between countries. The Abu Dhabi Arts Society’s support of this event showcases art’s important role in celebrating and strengthening international relations.

Alderman Sheriff Tim Hailes FKC:

"When I first saw the finished portrait I was delighted. I've always admired Holbein - both for the richness of his detailing and also the powerful symbolism embedded in his work - but this painting is a pinnacle of virtuoso detail in that spirit that is quite extraordinary.

It is also inventive and original in its composition, cleverly articulating both tradition and the past and the way the role of Sheriff of the City of London is nonetheless rooted in the modern world. Those who know me well say it has captured an excellent likeness and vitality and captures my love of history, interest in China and the Far East and pride in our unique civic community - as well as a determined twinkle in the eye !

The portrait commissioning process was both enjoyable and professional - and I could not be happier.”

Unveiling of the portrait of Dr. Ross, Master Arbitrator took place at the Mansion House Arbitrators’ dinner in 2014. Photograph courtesy of Gerald Sharp photography, 2014.

Dr. Derek Ross, Master Arbitrator 2013-14:

“I am absolutely delighted with Ellie’s rendering of my portrait. Quite apart from it being a very accurate likeness, her handling of the various textures involved is superb, as is her meticulous and painstaking attention to many intricate details. She has achieved a realism and vibrancy reminiscent of the Dutch Masters of old, and I cannot praise her work too strongly. People keep asking if my portrait is a photograph, which of course it is not. Studying it for a while, I can almost see myself thinking.”

Fiona Adler, Sheriff of London 2014 -15:

“I was astounded by the portrait that you did of Derek - truly brilliant and ‘Masterful’ without losing the man to the position. I am in awe of your talent.”

Karen Foley, EMEA Talent Acquisition Partner, Concur:

“Thanks a million for the fabulous portrait you painted of my father recently. The detail and accuracy was astounding (even down to each slightly unruly eyebrow hair!) However the even bigger surprise for me was how you were also able to capture his warmth and vitality on canvas! It truly surpassed all our expectations and my family and I are so grateful for all your hard work and talent!”

Mr. Peter White, Master Framework Knitter, 2017-18:

“Thank you so much for painting such a good likeness. Julia and I are both delighted with it. My children are also delighted with the fantastic likeness of the portrait and character showing through it.”

Right Honourable Chris Grayling MP, Secretary of State for Transport, U.K.:

“The portrait of my constituent Peter White was one of the best portraits I have seen.”

Mr. Rodney Bennion OBE: “Researching the portrait market, Eleanor’s work is the best out there. I am really pleased with her portrait of me which is superb in its lighting, mood and detail.”

Mrs. Liz Bennion: The detail of Eleanor’s portrait is amazing and surpassed what we expected. It is like embroidery with its level of three dimensional illusion and intricacy.” . z Benni
